Valles Calchaquíes

The Rio Calchaqui, which originates high up in the Andes on the slopes of the Nevada de Acay at over 5,700 metres, meanders along the strikingly beautiful Valles Calchaquies, which enjoy over 300 sunshine days annually. La Poma, just off the northern end of the Ruta 40, lies in the shadow of the Cumbre del Libertador General San Martin at some 6,380 metres.

Farther south along the Ruta 40, which runs through the Calchaquí valleys, are several small villages including the old colonial settlement of Payogasta, the pretty little red-pepper producing village of Cachi and Molinos with its impressive church. Beyond is Angastaco, San Carlos, Animana and the wine-producing hub of Cafayate. East of the valleys is the Parque Nacional Los Cardones established to protect the Condon cactus.

Within the Calchaquí valleys themselves are numerous other rivers and valleys such as the Quebrada de Escoipe, the Valle Encantado, the Quebrada de las Conchas, and the Quebrada de las Flechas - with its fantastic rock formations. The Calchaquíes were once inhabited by sophisticated indigenous Indian groups such as the aptly-named Calchaquíes, the Tafí, and the Yokavil, also sometimes referred to collectively as the Diaguita.
