Something you wish to say about this page? HistoryAt the turn of the 16th century the Rio de la Plata was discovered by Amerigo Vespucci although some say the Portuguese navigator Juan Diaz de Solis was the first to land on the shores of the Plata in 1516. A few years later in 1520 Ferdinand Magellan found a passage through to the Pacific Ocean. Both expeditions were to reveal the geographical character of Argentina’s Atlantic coast. Before the Europeans arrived though, much of the country was inhabited by aboriginal Indians who are believed to have landed here around 13,000BC.
