Fiesta de la Tradicion(Reads: 4872, 03-Jun-2009)
San Antonio de Areco, one of the oldest gaucho towns in the Pampa, will host its 70th Fiesta de la Tradicion this year. And the Dia de la Tradicion, which takes place on 10 November, is the grand finale to the week-long fiesta. Jose Hernandez, the author of one of Argentina’s most famous gauchos, Martin Fierro, also celebrated his birthday on the 10 November, hence the date. The fiesta is full of gaucho tradition. There are competitions, dances, horse-riding, folk music, bronco riding, asados (barbecues) and a gaucho parade as well as exhibitions of local craftwork including silverware, saddles, spurs, stirrups, saddles and other gaucho paraphernalia.
The Dia de la Tradicion all began with the novel by Argentine estancia owner Ricardo Güiraldes, Don Segundo Sombra. The protagonist is a gaucho who is somewhat based on the real life of Segundo Ramirez, then resident in San Antonio de Areco. The first Dia de la Tradicion, in honour of author Jose Hernandez, took place in 1939 and the town has never missed a party since. The Fiesta starts in the Parque Criollo at noon on Saturday with the first asados followed by music and dancing later on that day. The finale the following Sunday involves hundreds of gauchos in their traditional dress - typical bombachas (baggy jodhpurs), wide-leather belts, boots and leather hats or berets - parading through the centre of town.
