Tandil

Tandil, some 350 kilometres south of Buenos Aires, sits amid the range of hills referred to as the Sistema de Tandilia, popular with mountain bikers, horse riders and walkers. Tandil is a university town as well as a fashionable weekend-getaway for many Buenos Aires residents particularly in January, February and at Easter when it plays host to the Via Crucis celebration. The European influence of immigrants from Denmark, Italy and Spain is evident in the town's architecture and cuisine. The centre of Tandil is made up of attractive cobbled streets at the heart of which stands the Plaza de la Independencia overlooked by the Iglesia del Santisimo Sacramento and the Muncipalidad. The streets surrounding the plaza are lined with good cafes, restaurants, ice-cream parlours and delicatessens. Just out of town are the sierras, of which Cerro Las Animas is the highest at just over 500 metres, but Cerro Centinela is more accessible and more frequented by visiting tourists.
