Oberá

Less than 100 km east of Posadas in the province Misiones is the multi-national town of Oberá otherwise referred to as the Capital del Monte (of the forest). At the end of the 19th century many European immigrants arrived to settle in the area from Finland, Sweden, Germany and Denmark as well as from France, England and the Lebanon. And every year in September the town’s cultural roots are celebrated in the Fiesta Nacional de Inmigrante.

Oberá, which means shining bright, is named after an indigenous chief. The town was officially founded in 1928 and because of its cultural diversity it boasts a plethora of religious denominations from Eastern Orthodox to Catholic and Evangelical, hence the number of different churches. But besides its churches there’s the Museo de Historia y de Ciencias Naturales Florentino Ameghino in the Parque de las Naciones where there are also examples of immigrants’ houses. And over 100 bird species can be spotted at the Jardin de los Pajaros Wendlinger while one of the largest serpent collections in the country can be seen at the Centro Zootoxicologico. Oberá, full of lush vegetation, is surrounded by yerba mate tea plantations.
