Just over 50 km north of Paso de los Libres is the village of Yapeyu, which looks over the Rio Uruguay and across to Brazil. It is probably most famous as the birthplace of independence hero General Jose Francisco de San Martin. He was born here on 25 February 1778. The Templete del General San Martin on Sargento Cabral with Gregoria Matorras protects what remains of the residence of Governor Juan de San Martin and his wife Gregoria Matorras, where the General was born, and their urns. The Museo SanMartiniano, Gregoria Matorras y Sargento Cabral has displays of the General’s personal belongings which include several documents, arms and paintings. The attractive Iglesia San Martin de Tours on Obispo Romero with San Lorenzo was constructed in 1899 while the Museo de Cultura Jesuitica R P Guillermo Furlong was constructed on top of the ruins of an old Jesuit church and is dedicated to the lives of the indigenous people.
