Isla del Cerrito

(Number of Articles Reads in Isla del Cerrito: 0)

The lovely Isla del Cerrito, sometimes called the Isla del Sol, sits at the confluence of the Rios Paraguay and Paraná, some 54 km north of the city of Resistencia. It is a popular tourist destination, particularly among fishing enthusiasts, and in August on the opposite shores Paso de la Patria hosts the Fiesta Nacional del Dorado.

The island’s only village, Cerrito, boasts white sandy beaches, and several restaurants and accommodations. It also has its own Museo Historico, which recounts how the island became the epicentre during the War of the Triple Alliance (or Paraguayan War) which started in 1864 between Paraguay and the allied countries of Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. It 1876, however, Isla del Cerrito officially became Argentine territory. On display at the museum are hundreds of objects from all four participating armies.

On the hill, after which the island takes its name, is a small colonial chapel which is surrounded by beautiful palms, guava and orange trees. Needless to say the island is abundant in flora and fauna and has been declared a Reserva Provincial.
