The small precious-stone mining town of Wanda, founded in 1936 by Polish immigrants, is a 40-minute bus ride south of Puerto Iguazu. There’s little to see in the town itself but the nearby open-cast mine offers short tours of Tierra Colorada and Compania Minera Wanda. Amethyst and agate are the principal precious stones mined from the various seams. Amethyst is considered to have special properties and energies and is deemed to be the international stone of peace.
