Puerto Iguazú

(Number of Articles Reads in Puerto Iguazú: 0)

Just north of Iguazu Falls is the small town of Puerto Iguazu, which is situated high above where the Parana and Iguazu rivers meet. The town is dominated by low predominantly white-painted buildings, many of which are decorated with painted flowers, and lush green vegetation. The town’s inhabitants are, needless to say, almost entirely dependent on the tourist trade.

Avenida Victoria Aguirre, the main thoroughfare, bisects the town diagonally. And most of what takes place happens around the central intersection where Calles Brazil and Ingeniero Gustuvo Eppens meet Aguirre. Here Aguirre changes name to Avenida Tres Fronteras which leads to the mirador otherwise known as Hito de las Tres Fronteras (three borders landmark), above where the Rios Iguazu and Parana meet and from where you can see Brazil and Paraguay, hence the name. An alternative route to the viewpoint is along the Costanera which runs above the Rio Iguazu. Here are a couple of places where you can sit and admire the view over a cold drink.

A couple of minutes down the road is Guirga Oga (Casa de los Pajaros), a sanctuary for injured birds or for those birds rescued from traffickers. Here they are cared for until they are ready to be reintroduced to the wild. Some 4 km along the Ruta 12 is La Aripuca is a giant replica of a Guarani bird trap. It was constructed from 30 different tree species native to the province of Misiones.
