The Quebrada del Toro boasts the most spectacular scenery in the province of Salta - dense ceibo forest, pampas grass, colourful rocky mountains carpeted in cacti and high desert puna. Leaving the city of Salta along the Ruta 51 you’ll first pass the weekend resort of Campo Quijano and farther along the ruined pre-Inca city of Santa Rosa de Tastil before arriving to the old mining town of San Antonio de los Cobres, some 130 km northwest. Or the Tren a las Nubes - one of Argentina’s most famous railway tracks - also wends its way up the gorge to the altiplano.
