Tourism Guide / Patagonia / Rawson
Rawson(Number of Articles Reads in Rawson: 0) The town of Rawson, capital of the Chubut province, is just south of Trelew and close to the Atlantic coast in southern Argentina. It was originally founded by Welshman Henry Jones and takes its name from the then Argentine interior minister Guillermo Rawson. It was later settled by Welsh immigrants who arrived to Puerto Madryn from Britain on the clipper Mimosa in 1865. A few Welsh chapels are dotted around town and there are a couple of museums: the Museo Regional Don Bosco - which boasts displays of fossils, fauna and artefacts from the indigenous people and the first Welsh settlers - and the Museo de la Ciudad which has more artefacts and old photographs.
The town’s Centro de Conservación de la Biodiversidad Patagónica is home to a few native species such as the condor, ñandú and guanaco while some five kilometres to the north is Playa Union, a 10-km-long beach, from where you can observe groups of toninas overas, a black and white dolphin, from April through to December. Here the Estación de Fotobiología has an interpretation centre open to the public. And some five kilometres down river is Puerto Rawson, a small fishing port.
