Colon(Number of Articles Reads in Colon: 0) Some 335 km north of Buenos Aires is the attractive Entre Rios resort town of Colon with its sandy riverside beaches, shady palms and lovely old houses. The old port area with its cobbled streets and colonial architecture close to Plaza San Martin east of Plaza Washington is particularly attractive. Colon was founded in the 1860s when it served as a port for the nearby settlement of San Jose. The town is also linked to the Uruguayan city of Paysandu via the Puente Internacional General Artigas.
Just 50 km to the north of Colon is the Parque Nacional El Palmar with its lovely old palm forest and abundant wildlife. Southwest of Colon is what was one of the country’s most luxurious houses, the Palacio San Jose, constructed in the 1800s for the wealthy General Justo Jose de Urquiza. In Villa Elisa, some 30 km from town, there are some modern thermal bathes and farther north still is the rural community of Arroyo Baru where the inhabitants welcome and accommodate those in search of a little tranquility.
