The sprawling city of Resistencia is the capital and commercial hub of the Chaco province. At its heart is the attractive Plaza 25 de Mayo which spreads across four blocks. Here you’ll find lots of shady trees and a plethora of local flora.

Resistencia has been dubbed La Ciudad de las Esculturas (city of sculptures) due to the quantity of statues, most by esteemed artists, dotted around town. The Fogon de los Arrieros, an open-air gallery, was established by local artists and became particularly popular back in the 1960s when it attracted many renowned names. It’s packed with sculptures and murals. The Domo del Centenario hosts the Bienal Internacional de Esculturas where sculptors come to compete every two years.

The town has a handful of museums, which include the Museo del Hombre Chaqueno, an anthropological museum that covers pre-Hispanic history and colonization, the Museo de Ciencias Naturales Augusto G Schulz and the Museo de Antropología Juan Alfredo Martinet which boasts a collection of artefacts such as funeral urns, old axes and ceramics.

Northeast of town there’s a large nature reserve on the Isla del Cerrito. Or some 115 km north is the Parque Nacional Chaco on the banks of the Rio Negro. Here you’ll find some fabulous native forests and wetlands where birdlife abounds.
