Currency
You can change money at the Buquebus terminal in Buenos Aires or when you arrive to Colonia although generally most places accept US dollars or Argentine pesos. One US dollar is currently worth approximately 24 Uruguayan pesos.
Where to Stay
With the devaluation of the Argentine peso many Argentines simply stayed away from Uruguay as they found it too expensive. So hotels were forced to reduce their prices. Although they are still expensive it maybe possible to negotiate a descuento (discount) at a comfortable colonial-style hotel, particularly during the week. Or if your budget simply doesn’t run to this there is some budget accommodation and there is a private camp site outside town.
