Rio Grande

(Number of Articles Reads in Rio Grande: 711)

Blustery and somewhat bleak Rio Grande, founded in 1921, is yet another port which has developed on the back of livestock farming, particularly in the 1970s when the Argentine government introduced incentives. The town is situated on the north bank of the Rio Grande itself, less than 200 km from Ushuaia in the south of Tierra del Fuego, on the Atlantic coast.

Most of those who come here are in transit on the way to Ushuaia. Others come mainly for the brown trout fishing. For those interested in the town’s history, there’s the small but informative Museo de la Ciudad. Some 11 km north of town is the Mision Salesiana Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria, established in order to convert the local indigenous Selk’nam.

Estancia Maria Behety, set up by millionaire Jose Menedez, is an old-fashioned sheep farm just 17 km west of Rio Grande. It offers some of the world's best trout fishing. While Estanica Viamonte, some 40 km to the south, was established by Lucas Bridges, son of missionary Thomas Bridges. Here he built a refuge for the local Onas, a then dying tribe.
