Trekking in the Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego

(Reads: 1300, since 25-Nov-2008)

The park has some wonderful and relatively unchallenging trails which pass through spectacular scenery and afford stunning views. One of the most popular and arguably the most beautiful is the six-and-a-half kilometre Senda Costa (coastal path) which follows the bays of Lapataia and Ensenda along the Beagle Channel shoreline and through dense evergreen forest of coihue and canelo, much of it covered in old man’s beard, a lichen which abounds in the purest and uncontaminated air. The hike takes approximately three hours.

The Senda Hito XXIV eight-kilometre hike follows the northeastern shore of Lago Roca towards the border with Chile. Or there’s the eight-kilometre round trek up the little-under-a-thousand-metre Cerro Guanaco which is slightly more challenging and takes you to the top of the ridge at the north of Lago Roca. Once you’re past the tree line you’ll be privy to some fabulous views all around including the Cordillera Darwin, Ushuaia and the Beagle Channel. In addition to these, there are several shorter walks, such as the one-and-a-half kilometre Sendero de la Baliza which takes you into beaver territory or the kilometre-long Mirador Lapataia which also offers spectacular views over the lovely Bahia Lapataia.

The Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego has an office on San Martin 1395 in Ushuaia. Open Mon-Fri 9am-4pm. It issues fishing licences and has maps of the national park. Tel: +54 (0) 2901 421315.
