The Tren del Fin del Mundo

(Reads: 1614, since 25-Nov-2008)

The world’s most southerly steam train the Tren del Fin del Mundo (train to the end of the world) runs along the same tracks which once transported convicts from the penal colony to the forests each day, where they would cut wood for construction as well as for fuel. It was originally known as the Ferrocarril Austral Fueguino.

The train departs from the Estacion Fin del Mundo, some 8 km west of Ushuaia. It’s bright red-painted carriages run alongside the Rio Pipo to Estacion Parque Nacional, an entertaining way of arriving to the Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego. Along the way, the train stops at Estacion Cascada de la Macarena where passengers can disembark to see the Macarena waterfall and surrounding views. During the summer months, there are two daily departures at 9am or 2.30pm returning 12pm or 5pm. Tickets can be bought from various travel agencies in town or from the Estacion Fin del Mundo. Tel: +54 (0) 2901 431600. The journey takes up to an hour.
