Getting to Ushuaia

By Air
The Aeropuerto Internacional Malvinas Argentinas is on a peninsula just outside town. It’s a three-and-a-half hour flight from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia. Flight schedules change with the seasons.

Aerolineas Argentinas flies daily to Ushuaia from Buenos Aires and Rio Gallegos. Its offices in Buenos Aires are on Peru and Rivadavia, Avenida Leandro Alem 1134 or Avenida Cabildo 2900. Tel: +54 (0) 810 2228 6527. Its office in Ushuaia is on Roca 116. Tel: +54 (0) 2901 421218. During the summer both Aerolineas Argentinas and Lineas Aereas del Estado (LADE) with offices in Buenos Aires on Peru 714 (tel: +54 (0) 11 5129 9001) fly from El Calafate. LADE's office in Ushuaia is on San Martin 542. Tel: +54 (0) 2901 421123.

LAN sometimes operates flights from Punta Arenas in southern Chile to Ushuaia during the summer months. Its office in Buenos Aires is on Cerrito with Paraguay. Tel: +54 (0) 11 4378 2222. Or in Punta Arenas LAN has an office on Bories 884. Tel: +56 (0) 600 526 2000.

By Bus
Buses from Buenos Aires stop in Rio Gallegos in the province of Santa Cruz. Several long-distance bus companies operate this route. Their names and websites are listed at Bus America. The journey takes around 36 hours and buses generally leave at night.

By Car
It is a whopping 3,074 km from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia, a day-and-a-half’s drive at least. The most direct route is by following Ruta 205, which turns into Ruta 65 after San Carlos de Bolivar and on to Ruta 33 to Bahia Blanca. From here follow the Ruta 3 all the way along the Atlantic coast to Rio Gallegos. From there, you’ll need to carry on the Ruta 3 which turns into the Ruta 255 and cross into Chile. The main crossing is at Primera Angostura from Punta Delgada to Bahia Azul on Tierra del Fuego. Follow Ruta 257, then signs for the Ruta 3, which takes you back into Argentine territory and south to Ushuaia.
