The Parque Paleontológico Bryn Gwyn, just eight kilometres from the small village of Gaiman south of the Rio Chubut, is a vast fossil field which covers over 600 acres, some 40 per cent of which is dedicated to paleontological research. The Sendero Paleontológico starts from the Lower Field Station and wends its way around the park in a circuit which takes about one-and-a-half hours on foot. Experienced guides explain all about the geological layers where the fossils have been uncovered and about the fossils themselves. There’s also the Sendero Botanico which has several themed trails: the Sendero de Cabot Sedgewick details how native plants survive the area’s inclement weather conditions, the Sendero del Curandero has native plants with healing properties, and the Sendero de Botanica Economica has plants used for industrial purposes. Bryn Gwyn also has an arboretum with many plant species native to central Patagonia as well as research laboratories, an administration office and snack bar. Weather permitting the park is open all year round every day, except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, Mar-Sept 11am-5pm and Oct-Feb 10am-6pm.
