Since Calafate’s international airport opened in 2000, the town has never looked back. Improved accessibility has also helped increase tourism.

Aerolineas Argentinas operate direct flights to Calafate airport, under 20 km east of town, from Buenos Aires, Ushuaia, Bariloche and Trelew, Rio Gallegos. LAN also flies from Puerto Natales over the border in Chile to El Calafate during the summer months.

Shuttle buses (approx AR$10) and taxis (AR$30) run from the airport into town frequently.

By Bus
Several long-distance bus companies such as Don Otto and Andesmar travel to El Calafate. Also during the summer months buses leave from Bariloche and Rio Gallegos to El Calafate.

By Car
One of the most direct routes from Buenos Aires to El Calafate is by following the Ruta 3 out to Bahia Blanca, where you take Rutu 22, otherwise known as the Ruta de la Fruta, via Neuquen and on to Zapala where you meet the Ruta 40, which extends from the far north of Argentina to the far south. The Ruta 40 passes the eastern shores of Lago Argentino. Turn right on to Ruta 11 to El Calafate. From Buenos Aires it is 2,750 km.
