Monte Tronador

(Reads: 734, since 01-Dic-2008)

Monte Tronador at some 3,478 metres is the highest peak in the area. At its base is the little village of Pampa Linda, the starting point for several treks and for the climb up Tronador itself.

To get there, you need to follow the Ruta 40 along the shores of Lagos Gutierrez and Mascadi. The road forks at the southwest tip. From here, you head north along the single track to Pampa Linda (there are road timetables dictating when you can travel in either direction). Nearby are the Ventisquero Negro, a dark-coloured glacier, and the Garganta del Diablo, formed by  a number of falls. At Refugio Otto Meiling, it is possible to hire crampons and walk on the glacier.

Many tour companies offer day trips to Pampa Linda. Buses leave at 9am from the bus station or the Club Andino Bariloche also operates buses in the summer, which leave from outside the club on Calle 20 de Febrero 30 at 8.30am.
