The small sprawling town of Cafayate is situated in the beautiful Valle Calchaquies between Andean foothills. It is surrounded by attractive vineyards which have become increasingly popular largely due to their output of quality wines. The area is not only famous for the Torrontes grape, which produces a dry fruity white wine but it’s also recognised for its high-altitude reds, especially the Cabernet Savignons and Malbecs. Sunshiny days all year round and cool nights create a perfect climate for growing vines. Cafayate, some 190 km southwest of the northern city of Salta, has a range of accommodation and serves as a base for those wishing to visit the valley’s excellent bodegas as well as for those seeking to explore the marvellous scenery. It’s also an excellent place to purchase local crafts.
