Tourism Guide / The Northwest / Salta
Salta(Number of Articles Reads in Salta: 5.126) Salta, founded in the late 16th century, is one of Argentina’s most beautiful historic cities. It sits amidst undulating mountains at the east of the scenic Valle de Lerma - originally full of tobacco plantations – in the northwest, some 1,600 km from Buenos Aires, and is the capital of Salta province.
It’s little wonder the city is often referred to as Salta La Linda with its splendid colonial buildings, neo-classical churches and pretty shady plazas. Salta’s indigenous roots and rich culture have resulted in a long tradition of festivities, folklore, art, music and cuisine. In the Fiesta del Milagro, which takes place each September, Saltenos take to the streets in processions, parades and a host of other events, all to celebrate the fact that the city has never been reduced to rubble by an earthquake, unlike some unfortunate northern neighbours. The city also boasts a number of fine museums and art galleries, among them the Museo Historico del Norte which recounts the city’s history and the Museo Casa de Jose Evaristo Uriburu that shows how wealthier Saltenos once used to live. While the fascinating Museo de Arqueologia de Alta Montana exhibits artefacts uncovered in a sacrificial burial site atop Volcan Lullaillaco and the Museo Antropologico displays archaeological finds and more from the pre-Inca site at Tastil. Due to the relentless heat of midday-early-afternoon sun most Saltenos still participate in the long tradition of siesta which is why and when most museums and shops still tend to close. Salta’s temperate evenings, however, are perfect for people watching, shopping and dining out. It’s famous for its delicious tamales and corn humitas as well as the flowery, slightly acidic, delicious white wine varietal Torrontes, produced in Cafayate also in the province of Salta. Beyond the city there is also plenty to see and do. Visit the peaceful, cooler mountain village of San Lorenzo or take the Tren a las Nubes, which departs from Salta and passes through the magnificent Quebrada del Toro as it chugs on high up into the Andes. Alternatively, head north to the multi-coloured Quebrada del Humahuaca or trek into the cloud forests where birdlife abounds.
