The Ruta de los Siete Lagos

(Reads: 1098, since 03-Dic-2008)

The Ruta de los Siete Lagos (Seven Lakes Route) runs through the Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi from Bariloche to La Angostura and on to San Martin de los Andes or vice versa. The scenery is beautiful, breathtaking, serene and unspoiled. The seven lakes include Lago Nahuel Huapi which is by far the largest lake on the route. It's 70 km from Bariloche to the beautiful village of Villa La Angostura, from where you head out on the Ruta 234. Lago Espejo is the first lake you'll pass from here, so-named because of the reflection of the surrounding mountains in its crystalline waters and next the road follows the northern shores of Lago Correntoso. Farther on there's a magnificent valley and the dark-green Lago Escondido, the smallest of the seven lakes. At the foot of Cerro Falkner is Lago Falkner and opposite Lago Villarino.

Here Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi finishes and Parque Nacional Lanin starts. Lago Machonico is the only lake on route in the Lanin park. Follow the winding road down through forests of coihue, rauli and lenga into the pretty town of San Martin de los Andes. All along the 300-km route from Bariloche to San Martin de los Andes, there are lots of miradores (viewpoints) as well as lovely beaches and cascading waterfalls. There are also various other lakes if you detour from the Ruta 234, including Lago Hermosa, Lago Traful and Lago Espejo Chico. The trajectory takes around four hours.
