Museo Paleontológico Egidio Feruglio(Reads: 2239, since 19-Oct-2009)The Museo Paleontológico Egidio Feruglio or MEF for short is close to some of Patagonia’s largest and richest fossil deposits. The MEF, close to Plaza Centenario in the centre of Trelew, is a large modern museum which houses an astonishing 1,700 fossil pieces and 30 different dinosaurs with life-size replicas. The winding path through the exhibitions starts with the first inhabitants of Patagonia and passes back to the Mesozoic Age and all the exhibits have plenty of detailed information. Egidio Feruglio was in fact an Italian-born-and-educated scientist who worked in the region’s fossil fields and wrote Descripción Geológica de la Patagonia published in 1949. Fundacion Egidio Feruglio, established in 1991, was instrumental in the museum's construction; its prime objective was to ensure that all fossils found nearby remained in the area. The MEF also runs an exclusive night out for kids from eight to 12 called "Explorers in Pyjamas" where children spend the night playing games, learning about the world of paleontology and finally sleeping among the dinosaurs. There is also a small café and shop inside. Museo Paleontológico Egidio Feruglio, Avenida Fontana 140, Trelew, Chubut. Open Mon-Fri 10am-8pm, Sat, Sun 10am-8pm. Tel: +54 (0) 296 543 2100. Parque Paleontologico Bryn Gwyn, a vast fossil field less than 20 minutes' drive away, is also associated with the museum.
