Tren de la Costa

(Reads: 2402, since 12-Nov-2008)

The Tren de la Costa runs frequent daily services between Estacion Maipu and Estacion Delta in Tigre, some 30 km down the line, which follows the banks of the Rio de la Plata. Originally, the late 19th-century line ran from Estacion Retiro but was subsequently abandoned in the 1960s. The Tren de la Costa was inaugurated in 1995 after the northern section was reopened in order to facilitate a privately-run service with old-fashioned carriages.

San Isidro is one of the most attractive stop-overs for its smart mall, nearby historic quarter and weekend arts fair which starts from 10am. Also worthwhile is Borges with its millionaire mansions and Barranca with its weekend antiques market (open 10am-6pm). Other stop-offs include Libertador, full of Argentine designer wear, Anchorena with its cultural centre (centro cultural) or Peru Beach where you can hire windsurfers, kayaks or just chill out on the beach. Trains leave from 6.30am Mon-Fri and from 8am-12pm Sat-Sun. They run every 20 minutes. Tickets can be purchased on board. It’s worth buying a boleto turistico which means you can get on and off as many times as you like before arriving to Tigre, a 25-minute journey. A return ticket is currently AR$10.
