Museums in Recoleta

(Reads: 1559, since 09-Oct-2008)

On Avenida del Libertador which stretches from Recoleta to Palermo, you’ll find the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes at number 1473. Buenos Aires's principal museum was moved from what is now Galerías Pacífico on Florida to a building which represented the Argentine Pavillion in the Paris Exhibition of 1889, having been dismantled and shipped to Buenos Aires.

The museum subsequently moved again to its current location, an old pumping station. On display in some 32 rooms is an extensive collection of fine paintings and sculptures from masters such as Renoir, Rodin, Monet and Rembrandt among others. The upper galleries display some of the most notable 20th-century Argentine painters, such as Ernesto de la Cárcova, Benito Quinquela Martín, Alfredo Guttero, Antonio Berni, Xul Solar and Eduardo Sívori. Free. Open Tues-Fri 12.30-m-7.30pm, Sat-Sun 9.30am-7.30pm.Tel: +54 (0) 11 4803 0802.

At Charcas 2837 is the Museo Casa de Ricardo Rojas, one of Argentina’s most celebrated writers, who taught literature at the state university of which he later became rector. The museum was in fact the writer’s eclectic house, donated to the state by his widow in 1957. Inside are the original furnishings and the writer’s extensive library with over 20,000 books. Open Tues-Fri 11am-5pm. Guided tours.

A block away on Laprida 1212 is the Museo Xul Solar. It is a remarkable museum dedicated to the works of Alejandro Xul Solar, an eccentric porteno, who died in 1963. This 20th-century townhouse, now the museum, was renovated in the 1990s and belongs to the Fundacion Pan Klub. It’s as interesting and peculiar as Solar’s works. Born in 1887 Agustin Alejandro Schulz Solar or Xul Solar was a traveler-cum-painter-cum-musician-cum-inventor, and his paintings and other artistic creations all reflect his interests. Closed Jan. Open Tues-Fri 12pm-8pm, Sat 12pm-7pm. Tel: +54 (0) 11 4824 3302.

At Junin 1930 in the Centro Cultural Recoleta is the Museo Participativo de Ciencias, a hands-on interactive science museum particularly suitable for children. Open Tues-Fri 10am-5pm, Sat-Sun 3.30pm 7.30pm. Tel: +54 (0) 11 4803 1040.
