The Museo Casa de Yrurtia at Calle O’Higgins 2390 was constructed by the sculptor Rogelio Yrurtia in the Baroque style. He and his second wife, the artist Lia Correa Morales, lived here for over 20 years and many of their works are on display, including the moulds of several of Yrurtia’s sculptures. Open Tues-Fri, 1pm-7pm, Sun 3pm-7pm. Tours Tues-Fri 3pm, Sun 4pm.Tel: +54 (0) 11 4781 0385.

On Plaza Belgrano at Juramento 2180 the Museo Historico Sarmiento was the seat of government for a short period in 1880. President Domingo Sarmiento, who governed from 1868-1874, established one of South America’s most progressive education systems and encouraged immigrants from Europe. His descendents donated furniture and a collection of artifacts from his travels abroad, his library and other personal belongings. A small exhibition is dedicated to Nicolás Avellaneda who presided here in 1880. Open Apr-Nov Mon-Sun 1pm-5.30pm, Dec-Mar Mon-Fri 1pm-5.30pm. Tel: +54 (0) 11 4781 2989. Free Thurs.

The Museo de Arte Espanol Enrique Larreta at Juramento 2291 has an impressive collection of art from the Renaissance to the 20th century as well as porcelain, tapestries and furniture. All these were bought by the exiled Uruguayan Enrique Larreta. Lerreta subsequently married into an aristocratic Argentine family, the Anchorenas, and transformed the Greek-style villa, he was given as part of her dowry, into the Spanish-style mansion, which now houses his collection and some 30 other works transferred from Museo de Arte Hispanoamericano Isaac Fernández Blanco. And the Museo Historico Cornelio de Saavedra on Crisologo Larralde 6309 recounts daily life in old Buenos Aires and has a collection of antique furniture and silverware. Open Mar-Jan Tues-Fri 9am-6pm, Sat-Sun 4pm-8pm. Closed Feb. Tel: +54 (0) 11 4572 0746.
