Buenos Aires With Kids

(Reads: 711, since 03-Sep-2008)

Argentines are more than child-friendly so there are no worries about eating out with the kids; they are more than welcome in most dining houses and children's menus are commonplace. Besides strolling the streets of downtown Buenos Aires, around Puerto Madero and the colourful La Boca neighbourhood, there are plenty of greenspaces and attractions to keep the kids happy and entertained.

Parks and Zoos
Need to relax a while then wonder through the Parque 3 de Febrero, where you’ll find the Jardin Botanico with thousands of trees and plants, small ponds and orangeries as well as the Jardin Japones where you can also eat delicious sushi.

In the Bosque de los Rosedales you can rent a bike or boat and explore its winding paths and lakes. Also within the park at Avenida Sarmiento is the Planetario Galileo Galilei. A large meteorite from Chaco province adorns the entrance hall. Open Mon-Fri 9am-6pm, Sat-Sun 2.30pm-9pm. Tel: +54 (0) 11 4772 9265. Check the website for special events.

The Jardin Zoologico is a little tired looking and needs a thorough overhaul but the kids will be able to see many species native to South America.

Kids’ Museums
Museo de los Ninos is a Children’s Museum in the Abasto Shopping Center. It has plenty to do including building walls, crawling through a huge water pipe, cooking in a fast-food restaurant, flying an aircraft and shopping in a supermarket.

The Museo Participativo de Ciencias in the Centro Cultural Recoleta is a hands-on interactive science museum particularly suitable for children. Open Tues-Fri 10am-5pm, Sat-Sun 3.30pm 7.30pm.

To the north of the Jorge Newberry airport on Avenida Costanera Rafael Obligado 5790 is the holy Tierra Santa, the first religious theme park in the world. The park has lots on offer including, the creation, the resurrection, the last supper, theatre sets, a museum and you can even walk the streets of Jerusalem. Open May-Nov Fri 9am-9pm, Sat-Sun noon-11pm, Dec-Apr Fri-Sun 4pm-12am. Tel: +54 (0) 11 4784 9551 or go to website.

Amusement Near Buenos Aires
Some 50km north of Buenos Aires is the Bioparque Temaiken with a zoo of Argentine wildlife, an aquarium, a botanical garden and a natural history museum. It also has interactive exhibits about Patagonia, a theatre, a toddler playground and cafes.

More entertainment is on offer at the Parque de la Costa which purports to be the largest amusement park in South America. Situated alongside the Rio de la Plata, 45 minutes outside the city, there are roller coasters, a Ferris wheel, adventure rides, boat tours, rides for smaller children, and dance shows including the tango. There also good patio dining areas and theme restaurants. Open Summer Tues-Sun 11am-9pm, otherwise Sat-Sun 11am-8pm. Tel: +54 (0) 11 4002 6000.
