Buenos Aires

(Number of Articles Reads in Buenos Aires: 79.806)

The Argentine capital Buenos Aires, BA in short, is the most European of South American cities, which is why it is often compared to Paris, Madrid, London and, sometimes, even New York. Along its leafy boulevards and narrow cobbled streets are innumerable theatres and cinemas, fine restaurants, stylish cafes and trendy bars all mixed together with magnificent architecture, elegant galleries and chic designer boutiques. At the same time, this bustling metropolis has its own particular personality, brought about by long-standing traditions, a unique location and attractive inhabitants – largely of European descent, particularly Italian – who dine in ubiquitous parilladas (steak houses) and seductively dance in glamorous tango clubs well into the early hours. Some say BA rarely sleeps.

Situated on the south bank of the Rio de la Plata, Greater Buenos Aires is home to more than 14 million people, a third of the country’s population. It’s a sprawling city, the twelfth largest in the world, and comprises some 47 barrios (neighbourhoods), many with their own individual identity. There’s no shortage of greenery either; the city has an abundance of beautifully landscaped parks and shady plazas, where portenos – those born or brought up in BA – seek respite away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Buenos Aires is currently cleaning up so that it can celebrate 200 years of autonomous rule and independence in true Argentine style.
