Around Plaza Lavalle

(Reads: 892, since 08-Oct-2008)

Two blocks north of the city's landmark obelisco is Plaza Lavalle which started life as a public park. It is also from where the first locomotive train departed in 1857. Today the area around the plaza is generally referred to as Tribunales so it comes as no surprise that on the south of the square at Talcahuano 550 stands the architecturally curious Palacio de Justicia, home of the Supreme Court.

At the northern end at Libertad 785 is the Sinagoga Central de la Congregacion Israelita de la Republica Argentina, the country’s principal synagogue. It is possible to visit on Tues and Thurs from 3.30pm-6pm and learn the history of Argentina’s Jewish community, one of the largest in the world. Opposite at Libertad 815 is the Teatro Nacional Cervantes with its ornamental façade – it has a small museum displaying old costumes and model-size stage sets. Open Mon-Fri 10am-6pm.

To the east is the world-famous Teatro Colon on Libertad 621 although it is not the site of the first Teatro Colón which is opposite the Plaza de Mayo, now the Banco de la Nacion Argentina. That Colon shut but the Argentines’ love of opera forced a replacement, although it was a good while before it finally reopened on the site where it stands today. The Colon encompasses a mix of French, Italian and Greek architectural styles and reputedly boasts some of the best acoustics in the world. Many famous opera singers have performed here including Maria Callas, Lily Pons, Alfredo Kraus, Enrico Caruso and of course the three tenors – Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras. Although it’s most famous for opera, it also hosts ballets and classical concerts. Check the Teatro Colon website for any updates. Guided tours are recommended, Mon-Sat 11am-4pm, Sun 11am, 1pm and 3pm in both Spanish and English. Tel: +54 (0) 11 4378 7132 or +54 (0) 11 4378 7133 or email visitas@teatrocolon.org.ar
