Just three kilometres from the city centre in the northwest suburb of Chateau Carreras is the Centro de Arte Contemporaneo Chateau on Avenida Cárcano with Piamonte. The centre hosts temporary exhibitions of contemporary art. Open Tues-Sun 3pm-7pm. Tel: +54 (0) 351 484 9665. The suburb of Chateau Carreras was named after the Palladian mansion constructed in the woods of Parque San Martin by the wealthy Carreras family in the late 19th century. And the suburbs of Chateau Carreras and Cerro de las Rosas, particularly along Avenida Rafael Nunez, are where you’ll find the city’s best restaurants, bars and cafes as well as some of the city’s finest villas. These barrios have long since taken over from the once popular barrio of Nueva Cordoba, south of the historic quarter.

Nueva Cordoba boasts a veritable mish-mash of architectural styles. On Avenida Hipolito Yrigoyen 511 stands the impressive Palacio Ferreyra constructed in 1912 by Doctor Martin Ferreyra. Today it houses the Museo Superior de Bellas Artes "Palacio Ferreyra” which boasts a collection of both contemporary and classic art largely by Cordobans. It’s worth a visit just to see its immense staircase, carpeted in cowhide. Open Tues-Sun 10am-8pm. No phone. The huge Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes Caraffa on Avenida Poeta Lugones 41, is named in honour of Argentine painter Emilio Caraffa. It stages exhibitions from local artists. Open Tues-Sat 11am-7pm, Sun 2pm-8pm.  Tel: +54 (0) 351 433 3414. East of Plaza Espania is Parque Sarmiento, another of Argentina’s beautiful green spaces designed by the French landscaper Charles Thays.  It comprises a boating lake with islands, sports facilities, wide boulevards and thousands of native trees.

The Museo Historico Obispo Fray Jose Antonio de San Alberto, which stands opposite the Capilla Domestica on Caseros 124, recounts the Jesuit period and their mission in life. Open Tues-Fri 8.30am-12.30pm, Sat 9.30am-12.30pm. Tel: +54 (0) 351 422 3162. The Museo Antropologia de la Universidad Nacional de Cordoba on Hipólito Irigoyen 174 in Nueva Córdoba has collections of artefacts from Cordoba as well as other Argentine provinces. It also has exhibits about the indigenous people of Patagonia and the Chaco in the north of the country. Open Mon-Fri 9am-4pm. Tel: +54 (0) 351 433 1058.
