The Teatro del Libertador

(Reads: 1034, since 14-Dic-2008)

The Teatro del Libertador General San Martin on Avenida Velez Sarsfield 365 is not only the oldest theare in Argentina, its acoustics are considered to be among the best in the country. It was founded in 1887 by the then governor of Cordoba Ambrosio Olmos. Beautiful Renaissance, Japonese and French-style frescoes adorn the interior, while much of the furnishings were imported from Europe.

The theatre was finally inaugurated in 1891 and was first named in honour of the Cordoban poet Rivera Indarte, that is up until 1950 when it was changed to Teatro del Libertador San Martin in celebration of the 100th anniversary since the death of the great liberator Jose Francisco de San Martin. The theatre stages orchestral concerts, operas and dance productions. The ticket office is open from Tues-Sat 9am-1pm and 3pm-7pm. Tel: +54 (0) 351 433 2312.
