Manzana de los Jesuitas

(Reads: 801, since 12-Dic-2008)

The Manzana de los Jesuitas, a UNESCO-designated world heritage site, occupies an entire block southwest of Plaza San Martin. It was home to the oldest university in Argentina, the Universidad Nacional de Cordoba, which dates back the early 17th century. Today the university is attended by over 100,000 students and the manzana now only houses the university's administrative offices. It is also home to the Museo Historico de la Universidad Nacional de Cordoba Manzana Jesuitica with its beautiful shady plazas and fabulous libraries. The entrance to the University’s rectory and museum is on Obispo Trejo 242. Open Tues-Sun 9am-1pm and 4pm-8pm. Tel: +54 (0) 351 433 2075.

The Manzana is also home to the prestigious Colegio Nacional de Nuestra Senora de Montserrat which dates back to 1687. On the north side is the Templo de la Compania de Jesus constructed by Felipe de Lamer, a former shipbuilder, who designed the roof in the shape of a ship’s hull. The small 17th-century Capilla Domestica is around the corner on Calle Caseros, but here you’ll need to obtain a special permission in order to enter the chapel.
