Something you wish to say about this page? The Monasterio de Santa Teresa(Reads: 722, since 12-Dic-2008)The cream and pink Monasterio de las Carmelitas Descalzadas de Santa Teresa de Jesus, a Carmelite convent, lies to the southwest of Plaza San Martin on Independencia. As it still operates as a nunnery it is only possible to visit Iglesia Santa Teresa on Independencia 146 which opens daily for morning prayer at 7.30am. The monastery itself, designed by Portuguese architects, was founded by Juan de Tejeda after one of his daughters recovered from a potentially fatal disease. Part of the monastery has been given over to the Museo de Arte Religioso Juan de Tejeda on Independencia 122 which houses a vast collection of religious artefacts and paintings from the Jesuit era. Here, too, you can see the simple rooms once lived in by nuns. There’s also a lovely interior patio with orange and pomegranate trees. Open Wed-Sat 9.30am-12.30pm. Tel: +54 (0) 351 471 6685.
