If you interested in buying regional handicrafts then Salta is a great place to buy them. They’re usually of very high quality, too. On offer are all sorts of woven products from socks to ponchos, besides a range of ceramics, mate cups, finely carved wood, a variety of leather goods and lots of silver products. The Plaza 9 de Julio is where you’ll find some fine handicraft shops. Also the Mercado Artesanal on San Martin 2550 is probably the largest conglomeration of handicrafts in Salta. The smaller Feria Artesanal takes place on Friday evenings as well as Saturday and Sunday afternoons on Calle Balcarce near the railway station.
