Climate

(Reads: 1010, since 12-Ago-2008)

Occupying the southern portion of South America, Argentina's elongated geography, between 22° south and 55° south, ensures that the country has a diverse climate. The centre and east of the country are mostly flat and not very high; the west is mostly mountainous rising to the Andes, and the southern Andes produce dry, almost desert-like conditions in Patagonia. Argentina can be divided into five broad climatic regions: the Pampas (east central), the northeast, the west, Patagonia (south), and the Andean range.

The Pampas tend to have mild winters and warm summers when there’s more rainfall. And rainfalls are often heavy but decrease to the south and west. The sun shines for up to five hours a day in winter and up to nine hours in summer. There are no real extremes of temperature although sometimes there are frosts and draughts.

The Northeast has a near-tropical climate with high temperatures all year round. It is hot and often humid in the summer when rain is more likely. Winters are generally mild although there may be an occasional frost.

The West for the most part is dry and there is little rain. The sun shines for up to 10 hours a day in the summer and just a couple hours less during the winter.

Patagonia has a coldish, temperate climate, and it is very dry, even towards Tierra del Fuego and the Strait of Magellan. It never gets that cold but can be very windy.

It rains little in the northern Andes, but in the southrainfall is much higher explaining the existence of glaciers and eternal snowfields.

When to Visit
The north is subtropical with rain throughout the year and is best visited between May and September when the heat and humidity is less oppressive. The south has a sub-arctic climate and is best visited in the summer, that is from November to March or further south still from December to February. The central area is temperate, although it can be very hot and humid during summer months, particularly in January and February and surprisingly cool in the winter months. Snow fell in Buenos Aires in 2007 for the first time in decades.

Weather Forecasts
Apart from television and newspapers, which tend to give daily forecasts, the most authoritative weather forecasts can be found on a number of websites:

Yahoo.com gives 5-day forecasts for an extensive list of Argentine cities and extended forecasts of up to 10 days. Generally their forecasts are accurate with the occasional unexpected rainfall. More sites giving 5-day and extended forecasts include www.weather.msn.comwww.wunderground.comA monthly forecast is available at www.weather.com. Detailed weather forecasts from within the Argentine include www.infoclima.com and http://www.smn.gov.ar/.
