Geography

(Reads: 397, since 12-Ago-2008)

Argentina is the second largest country in South America and the eighth largest in the world and occupies the south east section of the continent. Covering more than 2.8 million square kilometers, Argentina is about one third the size of the United States, and extends between 22 degrees south and 55 degrees south. It shares borders with Bolivia in the north, Uruguay, Paraguay and Brazil to the northeast and a long border to the west, from the far north to the far south, with Chile.

Immense in size, Argentina offers an unparalleled geographic diversity from glaciers, mountains and lakes in the south to a desert of oasis villages and forested jungles in the north, not to mention the vast pampas, the rugged plains of Patagonia and the long Atlantic coastline in between. The country can be divided into four main areas:

the northern sub-tropics

the fertile pampas

the Patagonia Steppe

and the rugged Andean range
