Practical Information
Postal Services(Reads: 319, since 26-Ago-2008)The Argentine postal service (El Correo) is not renowned for its reliability and things do sometimes go missing. Hence, it is better to choose registered post to ensure it arrives, rather than normal post, and if you want it to get there faster, not guaranteed though, you could send it express post, too. If you definitely want it to arrive at its destination, it’s worth paying the extra and registering the letter or package. It might cost you double but it’s guaranteed. They take up to two weeks or longer to arrive to the rest of the world outside of South America. You’ll find post offices in all large cities, towns and even smallish villages. Also many locutorios (call centres), kiosks and newsagents offer the facilities to send mail. Letters and postcards, weighing no more than 20 grams cost 4 Argentine pesos (around US$1.25) to North America and the rest of the world and take up to 15 days to arrive at their destination. If you register (certificado) your letter or postcard it’ll cost just over nine pesos and if you send it express (expresso) it’ll cost around 17 pesos but still may take up to 14 days to arrive. Sending Small Packets and Packages More reliable is the post office’s encomienda (parcels) system. Small packets of 100 grams cost just under 8 pesos (US$2.50), up to 500 grams cost 21 pesos and up to 1 kilo cost 39 pesos (US$13) for North America and the rest of the world. If you register them the price goes up to 13 (US$4.45), 27 and 45 pesos respectively. To express them too the price increases to 21 (US$7), 33 and 53 pesos. Packets of up to 2 kilos to North America and the rest of the world cost 75 pesos (US$25), registered 81 pesos and express 89 pesos. Each additional kilo costs 4 pesos. If you register your package each additional kilo costs 4.5 pesos and if you express them each kilo in excess of two costs 5.5 pesos. For further details go to Argentine Post Office. Alternatively, if you need something to arrive and quickly then international couriers DHL, Federal Express and UPS all have offices in Buenos Aires and some other large cities. Obviously they are considerably more expensive but they are reliable and fast. Receiving Post It’s preferable for the sender to register any mail sent to Argentina and if they don’t send it by courier then most post offices offer a poste restante and keep such mail for up to a year. The sender will need to post it to the appropriate post office, clearly addressed. In order to pick up mail you’ll need identification, such as a passport. Sending Mail in Argentina If you want to send parcels within Argentina or letter even, then many bus companies offer an encomienda service. The recipient, however, has to go the bus company’s encomienda section to pick up the mail and within a month else it’ll be returned to the sender. Again you’ll need identification. If you wanted to buy something bulky like a poncho or rug, then you might consider, in order not to have to lug it around, sending it to yourself, provided you picked it up within the month.
