Practical Information
Accommodation in Argentina(Reads: 398, since 26-Ago-2008)Argentina seems to have nearly every conceivable type of accommodation from the basic hostel to the most luxurious of hotels and everything that comes in between and more. And, mostly, it’s very good value and the standards are high, even towards the cheaper end of the scale. Larger hotels in cities and the more-touristy places sometimes charge foreigners more than nationals (this happens with lots of things). It’s ALWAYS worth asking for a descuento (discount). If you pay in cash – you will nearly always get a discount, especially in the smaller establishments and particularly off-season. Many international hotel chains, such as the Hyatt, the Hilton and the Marriott exist in Argentina and have hotels in Buenos Aires and other large cities. There are countless websites with seemingly endless lists of accommodations across Argentina, particularly Buenos Aires, ranging from the most expensive to the lesser-priced. There is a plethora of middle-price and lots of smaller, cheaper style accommodation. In Buenos Aires it is easy to rent a furnished apartment which is often works out more economical if you’re traveling in a group or with your family; see alojargentina for these and apart-hotels. Both come with mucuma (maid) service. Increasingly popular are small boutique hotels, particularly in Buenos Aires, but also in the wine country, the northern jungle, and the foothills of the Andes, Pampas and Patagonia. These hotels tend to be smaller; some are very chic and offer lots of character as well as a more personalized service. Designer-style hotels and hip hotels also fall into this category and as they are quite exclusive they can often be quite expensive. There are many companies with listings, descriptions, photos and prices: Great Small Hotels, Tablet Hotels, Epoque Hotels or Avant Garde Hotels. Bed and Breakfasts are also becoming more commonplace and can be found throughout the Argentine. They are often very reasonably priced, very comfortable, stylish and more personal. Some are listed on ibbp or at the bed and breakfast center where you can check out prices and photos. Other sites with an easy list by province of b&bs is innsite or argentinabnb which also lists some fishing lodges, country inns and boutique hotels. Cabanas, which tend to be more out of town except in the Lake District and more rural areas, are great value. Many are basically small well-furnished houses with two or more bedrooms, kitchen with utensils and bathroom. It’s a great way to stay if you’re traveling with your family or friends as they can often sleep large numbers of guests. See cabanias.com. Hosterias and Posadas are smallish hotels with no more than 20 rooms. They can be quite luxury or very simple and exist throughout Argentina, mostly outside Buenos Aires. See hosterias and posadas for listings. Hospedajes tend to be private homes which offer rooms and breakfast and can be a cheap option where as Residenciales provide basic accommodation. Hostels have changed for the better. Hostel South America offers reservations at international youth hostels, independent hostels, backpacker hostels and budget hotels all over Argentina. It’s a great site where you can check availability, prices, see photos and book your accommodation ahead. Also check out hostels.com where you can also book ahead and read various comments left by travellers. Argentina has some fabulous National Parks and most have well established campsites that come with a picnic bench and a small quincho (barbecue) – they normally supply wood. Some municipal campsites in towns can be little more than a small lot or field and most towns tend to have them. Estancias are either huge cattle/sheep ranches or just large farms and are dotted around the country. Over the years more have started opening their doors to tourists in order to increment their incomes. Many estancias belonged to wealthier Argentines and the family home is luxurious and lavishly decorated, others are simple but often stylish farm houses. The more opulent tend to be more expensive still. Either way, you’ll be privy to the lifestyle of the owners as well as their gaucho (cowboy) hands. Some estancias have gone into tourism big-time improving their infrastructure; some even run restaurants and offer a day in the campo (countryside) experience. At Patagonline there are various estancias listed in Patagonia, the Atlantic coast and Ushuaia or check Estancias Argentinas. Fishing lodges exist throughout Patagonia and down to Tierra del Fuego. Most offer stylish, comfortable accommodation and organize fly fishing trips daily. Lots of week packages. Vineyards have also thrown open their doors to tourists. Some offer accommodation, boast fine restaurants and offer the tours and tasting that have so long been available in other wine-producing countries. See Argentina wine hotels or wine hotels collection for some examples.
